Every year, thousands of Canadian horses are crammed into crates and flown to Japan for slaughter. Deprived of food, water, and space, they suffer extreme distress, injuries, and even death.
In 2023, Liberal Member of Parliament Tim Louis introduced Bill C-355 to ban the live export of horses for the purpose of slaughter.
Despite opposition from every member of the Conservative and Bloc Québécois parties, the bill successfully passed through the House of Commons thanks to the support of the Liberal Party.
Unfortunately, when the bill reached the Senate, progress came to a halt.
Several senators, including Senator Rob Black, used up the allotted time during each discussion period, effectively stalling the bill.
With the announcement of a federal election set for April 28th, the bill ultimately died on the order paper
Please join us in thanking Senator Dalphond, who strongly championed Bill C-355 once it reached the Senate.
We also encourage you to join us in calling on Senator Dalphond to reintroduce a similar bill in the Senate following the upcoming federal election.
With continued leadership and public support, we can bring an end to the live export of horses for slaughter.
